As a team, Newcastle locals Bruce Deer and Warren Kildey took part in their 20th Variety NSW Bash which takes a round trip throughout NSW, starting and finishing in Newcastle, 19th – 25th May. To date, the team has raised over $160,000 and hope to generate a further $10,000 in 2019, for kids who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs.
The Variety NSW Bash covered 2,200 kilometres and passed through many remote communities including Bomaderry, Moruya and West Wyalong. More than 100 cars participated.
Bruce Deer, a former primary school teacher, from Cooranbong comments, “The Variety NSW Bash is all about the kids and giving back to those in need. I have worked with children all of my life and understand the importance of access to books, technology devices and play equipment.
“To see the smiles on the faces of rural children when they have received gifts for over two decades has been priceless and brought much joy to Warren and myself. The comradery, friendships and bonds formed with other competitors has also added greatly to the experience.”
“Numerous companies have generously supported us over the years including local business Grosvenor Engineering Group. With the help of sponsors, we can continue to bring smiles to many more faces. It is a humbling experience to be involved with an event that has done so much for disadvantaged children in rural communities,” he added.
Troy Maarschalk, Business Unit Manager, from Grosvenor Engineering Group located in Adamstown comments, “This is the sixth year that we have sponsored Bruce and Warren, donating over $25,000 to their cause. Education is the foundation for children’s grow. As a community minded organisation this is our way of giving back and supporting disadvantaged children at a grassroots level.”
